Recently there has been a demand for tools which will allow the user to create video games for the PC and consoles. In the last few years many options have become available, and in this article I will outline a few of them. I will also cover some of the terminology of this subject, and provide some alternatives to creating your own games on the PC.

Make Your Own Video Games for Consoles:

The only console system you can currently make games for is the Xbox 360. To do so you need to download XNA and join their “Creator’s Club” for $99.00 a year. XNA has been designed to be fairly easy to use, but some programming experience is required.

Make Your Own Video Games for the PC:

There are many options if you want to make your own games on the PC. The first thing you need to know is the difference between a game engine, and a GCS (Game Creation System.)

Game Engines:

A video game engine is just that, an engine. Few if any tools come with it, so some programming is required. There are many commercial engines available such as the Unreal Engine or CryEngine 2, and almost as many free alternatives. Crystal Space 3D and the Irrlicht Engine are examples of the later.

GCSs:

If you don’t want to mess with any programming you need a GCS. A GCS packages a video game engine along with a variety of tools which can be used to make a game. There are a lot of commercial options, such as Torque or Gamestudio, but no comprehensive free or open source alternatives. Delta 3D is one such choice, but you will need additional tools to create games with it.

I should also mention that GCSs may not be a perfect fit for your particular needs when making a game for the PC. Most game developers use many custom tools tailor made for their needs as a result. So your best bet is to use tools that are specialized for different aspects of game development. You will need a good programming environment, a good image editor, a good sound and music editor, and a good modeling animation studio.

The current industry standard modeling and animation studios are 3DS Max and Maya. However True Space and Blender both provide excellent free alternatives, and are backed by large, supportive communities. The industry standard image editing programs are Paint Shop Pro and Adobe Photoshop, but the free alternatives Gimp and Paint.NET will work just as well. Expensive programs like Cakewalk are used for the creation of music and sounds, but Audacity is a free alternative. The best free programming environment is Microsoft Visual Studio Express.

Making video games requires a lot of work, but with the right tools it can be done fairly quickly and easily. Now that you know what tools to look for, it should be a lot easier to find what you need.

Hey all, this is a guessing game I have written for my operating systems class. It was written for a bash (bourne again shell) unix operating system.

It uses a simple while loop with if loops nested in it to see if the guessed number is higher or lower than the random number.

With more and more spyware popping up everywhere and in all sorts of forms, the general public has had to battle against it somehow. This is what I call the Anti Spyware Revolution. In this day and age, most homes have a computer. Some homes have more than three computers! Now with all of those computers, it gives the people who create spyware, a large number of computers to infect. If you are oblivious to spyware, you will not be a happy surfer.

Most people have no clue how to spot spyware, or recognize the symptoms. I will go over some symptoms that you might have on your computer when you are infected.

1. Biggest symptom is by far pop up advertisements. You’re trying to finish up your essay or you’re writing the last bit of your business proposal and all of the sudden… Party Poker pops up. Who opened this you might think. Your worst nightmare did, and it’ll do that 200 more times in the next few hours.

2. Slooooww computer. If you notice your computer booting up rather sluggishly, then you probably have some sort of spyware. It could also be you just have a lot of applications starting up at the initial boot up, but it will most likely be the fact that you have spyware. Everyone has some sort of routine they follow, for most people it includes getting up, and getting ready to go to work. Some people also have a routine that they follow when they sit down on their computer. Mine goes something like login, check email, reply to emails, read some news sites, check out 2-3 forums, reply to threads, personal messages, then scan to remove spyware.

Even though it is usually the last step in my virtual routine, it is by far the most important. Well, maybe after checking my email. No matter where it is in my routine, it is still important.

I usually let people know about my routine, and the usual response to my spyware removal habits are “you have too much time on your hands” or “I don’t even know how to do that”. These responses really surprise me because it is so easy to remove spyware. On another note, it does not take long and can run in the background of your computer.

While there are always new spyware viruses popping up every day, there are also companies and programs popping up every day to counteract all the new spyware. These companies are always developing new techniques to try and stop the spyware infection. These spyware removal techniques include things like remove, or block the spyware from even seeing your computer.

There are tons of free spyware removal tools; a couple that come to mind immediately are Ad-Aware by Lavasoft. This program comes in a lot of different languages, and comes in either a paid version or free version. Recently they have released a 2007 version with a highly updated search engine and a new design. This is one of the best spyware applications out there. Lavasoft releases an update to their search definitions almost daily it seems. Every time I open up the application, they have an update to download.

Next on my imaginary list, is Spybot S&D. Spyboy Search & Destroy is also one of the pioneers of the industry. They are proud to be a completely free application, and they also release updates to their search definitions. Know what you’re getting into

Before you dive into becoming a video game programmer, spend a little time to research what working at a video game studio actually entails. You don’t want to spend time and effort becoming a video game programmer only to realize that it’s not what you were hoping for.

Working as a video game programmer takes a lot of effort. The work hours and deadlines can get stressful, especially near the end of a project. Talk with people who are in the video game business, either in person or online, about any questions you may have about the business.

Create your own games

Try your hand at making your own games at home to see what it’s like. You can start with simple projects first, such as basic text games or simple shooters.
